International study confirms feasibility and effectiveness of preoperative chemo-radiotherapy in high-risk soft tissue sarcomas
Dr. Óscar Tendero, co-author of the ISG-STS 1001 clinical trial, presented the results of an analysis assessing the tolerability and activity of combining epirubicin–ifosfamide (EI) chemotherapy with preoperative radiotherapy in patients with localized high-risk soft tissue sarcoma.
The study, involving 287 patients, demonstrated that concurrent administration of chemotherapy and radiotherapy before surgery is feasible and safe, achieving higher partial response rates according to RECIST criteria—particularly in borderline resectable tumors or when function preservation is a goal. While an increase in local complications such as wound dehiscence and seroma was observed, these were manageable. The findings support using this combined approach in selected cases to improve surgical and oncological outcomes.
